Hike at Morton Island

The hiking and camping was from 22/Dec/07 to 25/Dec/07. The preparations started a few days earlier. I picked up a sleeping bag, mat, a small beautiful gas stove, a rain jacket, a very good torch and a few other things. The fucking cost of each thing is so high. The only satisfaction is they are really very good quality stuff.

I was to take a ferry from Scarebrow at 1 PM. Started from home 5 hours earlier. Took bus 450 to the city, then a train ride to Sandgate, then again a bus ride to scarbrow.

Was talking to the bus driver who took me from sandgate rail station to Scarbroe. He forgot to tell me when my stop arrived. So he took me to the last stop. The bus keep running in a loop so on the next trip he dropped me at the ferry terminal. It is lovely to talk to absolute strangers. The bus driver will crib about his job and so will a cab driver. He was telling me about the CNG busses being very slow and how he is not able to stick to the schedule. Actually he gets paid if he has to drive for extra time to complete the number of trips he is supposed to do. He was telling me it’s unreasonable to be poor in this country.

Was waiting for the ferry there was gang of German teenagers it was lovely to watch those guys. One guy looked like he is the cool dude in the gang. When I was studying the cool dude will always smoke. Now the definitions have changed. It’s no longer cool to smoke. Girls also dislike smokers. There were around 20 odd 4X4 with families.

The ferry journey was fun. It was very windy. Imagine the early voyages guys like Columbus did mate. They were really brave people. Going into the open sea is so crazy. Hats of to those early explorers. I feel like chicken shit when we compare ourself to those guys.

Landed at COMBIEURO point at around 2.30 PM. Morton Island is a big lump of sand. The sand has created mountains and there is pretty dense vegetation on them. The beaches are absolutely gorgeous. You can see 10s of km of long beaches. The sand is super fine. From COMBIEURO point which is on the west side of the island you are facing the MORTON bay. I just kept watching the bay and it got dark.
There were 3 guys camping on top of a small mount. I decided to sleep near that gang. One guy was very friendly. They were drinking and invited me to join them. I don’t know I got drunk very fast. Went for a jog by the sea side. When I returned I could not find my camping site. Barged into a gang of teenagers who were having a peaceful campfire. The young guy was seriously concerned about me. So good to watch young people.
Next day morning woke up at dawn and started walking to BLUE lagoon camping site. It’s a 14 KM hike and there is a clear track to walk on. Lots of 4X4 passed by. Everybody was very kind and was asking if I need help. I was surprised at my endurance. I could walk 14 km in around 4 hours and I was fine. Also spotted a wild pig on the way. Funny how the animals live in every remote island. Make you wonder how the animals got there.

Hung around a bit at blue lagoon. Then started walking towards nortpoint. This 10KM walk was all along the beach. At the north tip is a light house. That is the only rocky part I saw in the island. Slept in a peaceful corner on the beach.
Next day walked back to COMBIEURO point and took the ferry back to home.
